In the year 1994 Tilganga Institute of Ophthalmology (TIO) was officially launches and the main motive to start it was to prevent and control the rate of blindness or eye problems in Nepal. It is a not-profitable community-based organization that is dedicated to providing promising eye care service. TIO is an active member of the Ministry of health and is running great projects authorizing the health professionals to cure the eye disease, skills-transfer education, cost-recovery, research with the association to Himalayan Cataract Project (HCP), USA. TIO is also regarded as the first-ever eye bank with the help of Tissue Banks International in Baltimore, USA, and Lions International.
The main aim of the Tilganga Institute of Opthalmology is to act as a model for treatment, research, and training. TIO is regarded as one of the top eye hospitals in Nepal for more than two decades. It is also because of the guaranteed amazing service for minor to major eye illnesses. Once, TIO worked with The Fred Hollows Foundations (FHF), Australia to strain and reshape a practical, safe and affordable technique of intraocular lens implant for cataract surgery in many developing countries.
